Shifting Grounds
Lena Maria Thüring lives and works in Zurich and Basel. The video installation «Shifting Grounds» sheds light on ecological and social change in Switzerland. The dwindling ice masses and newly emerging lakes not only tell of a changing nature, but also symbolize a changing society. For the project, the artist invited various singers to interpret a song. All the songs revolve around themes such as nature, landscape and home. While images of the mountain landscapes of the Gemmi region can be seen on the screen, voices can be heard singing about other landscapes, about home and exile. The Alpine region – a place where the effects of climate change are particularly visible – becomes the setting for a reflection on ideas of home, migration and identity. The work invites us to rethink our relationships to nature and to each other and to allow for alternative narratives.
